Urinary tract infections (UTI) occur when the bacteria E.coli gets into one’s urine and travels up to the bladder. The condition can be extremely painful and discomforting. Urologists suggest that the UTIs occur when you wear very fit clothes, wipe from back to front after passing stools, or if you don’t pee immediately after intercourse. Aside from medications, here are some remedies for curing UTI at home.
1. Stay hydrated
Adequate hydration helps manage several health issues and is considered one of the most important remedies for curing UTIs at home. It works by removing waste from the urinary tract organs and maintaining electrolytes. Taking in enough fluids dilutes the urine and removes it through the system quickly, preventing the bacteria from reaching the urinary organ and cause UTI. On an average, every person should drink to six to eight glasses of water every day.
2. Urinate when you have an urge
It is recommended to not hold in the urge to pee. Controlling the urine when you want to visit the washroom can be dangerous if you are suffering from UTI. Urinating frequently puts pressure on the infection-causing bacteria and helps to clear it out. This also reduces its exposure to the urinary tract and prevents the condition from developing.
3. Consume probiotics
Probiotics are good bacteria that help to keep the urinary system healthy and harmful bacteria free. Lactobacilli are a kind of probiotics that are used as natural remedies since they help by treating and curing UTI at home. Probiotics also helps in lowering the pH level in urine and produces hydrogen peroxide, which works as an antibacterial. For natural probiotics, you can have yogurts, kefir, and sauerkraut. There are additional probiotic supplements available over the counter.
4. Take lots of vitamin C
Vitamin C is a very important nutrient that helps in curing UTI at home and also improves the immune system. It is known to react with the nitrates present in urine and further form nitrogen oxides, which attack bacteria. The vitamin lowers the pH in urine and makes it difficult for the bacteria to survive. Vitamin C is found in many citrus fruits and vegetables. Supplements are also available over the counter.
5. Drink cranberry juice
Cranberry juice is another home remedy for curing UTI at home. This juice is loaded with polyphenols that are known for their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
6. Wipe off carefully
Many times, UTIs occur when bacteria from rectum come in contact with the urethra. Be careful while cleaning after passing stools and ensure you are not wiping yourself in a back to front motion.
7. Practice sexual hygiene
Practicing good sexual hygiene can reduce the chances of UTIs. Always urinate before and after having intercourse and wash the genitals, especially the foreskin. Use contraception, such as a condom, to prevent UTIs.
